MELBOURNE Carlos Rodon Youth Jersey , June 29 (Xinhua) -- Australia's top Catholic priest, Cardinal George Pell, has been charged with sex offences by Victoria Police on Thursday.
Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Shane Patton confirmed that Pell would be required to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on July 18.

"The charges were today served on Cardinal Pell's legal representatives in Melbourne," Patton told a press conference.

He gave evidence to the 2016 Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sex Abuse via video link after ill health made a return to Australia at that time impossible.
The Royal Commission found that 7 percent of all priests working in Australia between 1950 and 2009 were accused of child sex abuse.
